Paylocity started in 1997 as a payroll company and has grown into a publicly traded (NASDAQ: PCTY) HCM platform with $1.7 billion in revenue and about 39,000 clients. The sweet spot is mid-market companies with 50-1,000 employees, though they serve businesses as small as 10 people. The platform covers payroll, benefits administration, HRIS, time and attendance, recruiting, onboarding, performance management, expense management, and global payroll in 100+ countries through a partnership with Blue Marble.

The interface is modern and employees can self-serve for most common tasks (PTO requests, pay stubs, benefits enrollment, time tracking). The mobile app handles clock-in/out, schedules, and onboarding. Paylocity's API is well-documented with OAuth2, webhooks, and a 40,000 calls/hour limit, which matters if you're connecting it to other systems. The marketplace has 350+ integrations, putting it well ahead of legacy providers like Paychex.

One of the more interesting features is the employee engagement layer. Paylocity has built in a social community feed, peer recognition tools, and surveys that go beyond what most payroll platforms offer. Users also report cutting payroll processing time dramatically (one case study cited going from 3-4 hours down to 45 minutes).

The weak spots are customer support and reporting. Support reps rotate frequently, which means you're re-explaining your setup regularly. Building custom reports is harder than it should be, and navigating the reporting interface frustrates power users. Implementation can be rocky with a steep learning curve during setup, especially for tax configuration and PTO policies. Paylocity doesn't offer PEO or EOR services, so if you need co-employment or to hire in countries where you don't have an entity, you'll need a separate provider.
