What PayrollRated Is

PayrollRated is an independent review and comparison site for payroll, HR, and workforce management software. We don't sell software. We don't take money from vendors to write reviews. We exist to help people pick the right tool without wading through vendor marketing or pay-to-play "top 10" lists.

Our Data Sources

Every claim on this site is traceable. Here is where our data comes from:

  • Vendor documentation: Official pricing pages, feature lists, integration directories, and help centers. We cite specific pages, not vague "according to the vendor" references.
  • G2 and Capterra reviews: We aggregate ratings, review counts, and sentiment trends. When we say "the most common complaint is X," we've read enough reviews to back that up with a percentage.
  • Free trials and demos: Where available, we sign up. Specific observations from hands-on testing are marked as such.
  • Public financial filings and press releases: For company data like founding year, headquarters, funding, and customer counts.
  • Reddit communities: r/humanresources, r/payroll, r/smallbusiness, and industry-specific subreddits. Real practitioners discussing real problems with real tools.

What We Don't Do

  • We don't accept payment from vendors to write or edit reviews.
  • We don't claim hands-on experience with tools we haven't actually used.
  • We don't hide negative findings. Every tool has weaknesses, and we report them.
  • We don't use "AI-generated" as a pejorative while secretly using AI. We use AI tools in our research workflow and are transparent about it.

Affiliate Links

Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click through and sign up for a tool, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we keep the site running without charging readers or taking vendor money for reviews.

Affiliate relationships never affect our ratings, recommendations, or the order in which tools appear. We recommend tools we'd genuinely suggest to a colleague. If a tool with no affiliate program is the best fit, we still recommend it.

How We Stay Current

Payroll software changes fast. Pricing increases, features launch, companies get acquired. We re-verify every tool page on a 90-day rolling cycle. Each page shows its "Last verified" date and the next scheduled re-check. If something changes between cycles, we update it as soon as we catch it.

We don't do cosmetic "Last updated" bumps. When we update a page, we change real data: new pricing, updated review counts, added features, or revised recommendations. Our changelogs are honest.
